Today in US National Team History: USA 3-1 Poland (1990)

With just a month left to go before the first appearance in forty years for the United States in the world’s most popular sporting event, questions were abound regarding Bob Gansler’s squad. Quietly the Americans were confident, which bordered on naivety, but on this day in 1990, that confidence (or naivety) would be furthered.

The US faced Poland, ostensibly a side with a similar style to the the first American opponent in Italia 90, Czechoslovakia. With a resounding 3-1 result over a European nation in Hershey, PA, Coach Bob Gansler and the USA left for Europe brimming with optimism.

Here is the lineup the US fielded on this day in 1990, defeating Poland 3-1 behind goals from Bruce Murray, Christopher Sullivan, and Peter Vermes.
