Today in US National Team History
USA 0-0 Peru 1993
USA 2-0 Wales 2003 (Lewis, Donovan)
USA 2-0 Venezuela 2006 (Dempsey, Ching)
Each of these games represented underwhelming performances for the US at the point in time. The 1993 draw with Peru was a lackluster affair against a below average South American side.
The 2003 win over Wales almost didn’t take place because Welsh Manager Mark Hughes rightly almost pulled his squad off the pitch before the match. This was because the Spartan Stadium pitch was two small by FIFA standards and the infamous walls too close to the narrow pitch to ensure player safety.
The 2006 win over Venezuela was the second poor performance in the US Soccer sendoff series before World Cup 2006. The first match was a shocking loss to Morocco who had failed to qualify for Germany 2006, and while this match was won by the US, it did much to forecast how poorly the US would fare in the World Cup.
