Matchnight: Miami FC-Montreal Impact

A six pointer is the only way you can describe tonight’s game between Miami FC and the Montreal Impact. Gametime is 8pm ET and the game will be broadcast on Ignacio Rodriguez will be on the call with yours truly providing the color commentary.

Montreal’s season has been largely disappointing. Even worse, the Impact had a negative affect on the CONCACAF Champions League, a tournament they were so successful in last season: by fielding a team of reserves they allowed Toronto FC to grab a 6-1 victory and a birth in the tournament. Vancouver was eliminated largely because the rules of this competition take overall goal difference, and not goal difference between the two tied sides, as CONCACAF competitions do.

For example, the Hexagonal in 2005 saw the US and Mexico tied on 22 points and El Tri had superior goal difference. But because the US was +1 in goals versus Mexico (as Vancouver was versus TFC) it was the US who finished in first place.
