U-20 World Cup Group A Thoughts
Trinidad & Tobago were smashed in the opener of the FIFA U-20 World Cup by host nation Egypt, 4-1 on Thursday. Egypt controlled uch of the possession and the flow of the game. Hussam Arafat not only cored two goals for the hosts but was also impressive off the ball making good runs into space.
The matchup in the second game of the group between Nigeria and Venezuela featured two sides that could go deep into the knock out stages. Nigeria have the more athletic and technically gifted side, but tactical awareness and a sending off favored the South Americans.
Both sides pressed hard, with the Nigerians generally controlling possession and the midfield. The Venezuelan counter attack was lethal, and Yonathan Del Valle finally finished a chance right before halftime for the only score of the match. Del Valle had missed a few opportunities to open the scoring for the South Americans about midway through the first half.
Venezuela’s 1-0 win was well earned, but the Nigerians who always do well in youth tournaments cannot be counted out just yet.
