Lyon beat Liverpool! Let the excuses begin!
In another great win for French soccer, Ligue 1 side Olympique Lyonnais defeats Liverpool at Anfield to take nine points out of three games in their group. They are pretty much on their way to the knockout stage of the Champions League.
As is traditional in English football, I am sure that the excuses will be flying as to why Liverpool didn’t win. We will hear about Torres not playing. We will hear about Gerrard being taken out early in the game. Somehow, someway, I am sure a beach ball will enter the conversation.
Still, today, Lyon had the better and healthier team at Merseyside.
Lyon started off the match strong, putting the pressure on Pepe Reina. Lisandro just missed the goal early in the game that could have given the French side a 1-0 lead. But after that point, Liverpool increased their pressure. And late in the first half, Israeli Yossi Benayoun put the ball in for the home side.
Lyon also had a scare as defender Cris fell to the ground and was hit in the head by a charging Liverpool player. He would leave the match and be replaced by Maxime Gonalons in the 41st minute.
In the second half, it was a different story. Lyon manager Claude Puel, needing some scoring power, subsituted Ederson for Bafe Gomis. Lisandro, who also didn’t show much after the first 15 minutes, was replaced by Cesar Delgado, one of Lyon best substitute players.
From the outset, Lyon piled on the pressure and never looked back. In the 72nd minute, an unmarked Maxime Gonalons scored Lyon’s first goal. The second goal was set up by a nice pass by a charging Sidney Govou on the right side, feeding the ball to a wide open Delgado.
Again, I am sure the excuses will fly. Still, the almighty EPL loses to Ligue 1 at home. It is a great day for French football!
