Turkcell Super League – week 14 – Sunday action
With the shock losses of Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray, the high end of the Turkcell Super League table looked to be shaken up somewhat. With Bursaspor’s victory on Friday against Galatasaray, Bursaspor guaranteed themselves at least a top three spot. Fenerbahçe would still retain the lead, even after an embarrassing loss against Kasımpaşa, where they were thoroughly outplayed. Beşiktaş looked to extend their league winning streak to eight matches and claw their way to second place in the table.
Mustafa Denizli, the head coach of Beşiktaş, said before the match to wait until week 15, because he was confident that Beşiktaş would take over the league lead after that week. Beşiktaş looked like they could make Denizli’s words prophetic. A 23rd minute shot from Rodrigo Tabata went off the post, but Beşiktaş kept up the pressure. In the 29th minute, Bobo received a pass from Ibrahim Kas, and fired the ball into the net to put Beşiktaş up 1-0. The halftime score would end up with Beşiktaş taking the 1-0 advantage. In the second half, Sivasspor improved their offense, but couldn’t find the back of the net. With Ibrahim Uzulmez playing spectacularly as the left back, and the central defense of Tomas Sivok and Matteo Ferrari, Beşiktaş cruised to victory 1-0 and now have an eight match league winning streak. Perhaps, with the dip in form that Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray are experiencing, Beşiktaş might be able to take the league lead by next week.
Trabzonspor looked to rebound after firing their head coach Hugo Broos, and with rumors that former Trabzonspor great Senol Gunes might take over as the head coach, Trabzonspor looked to get back to business and attempt to make up a 13 point differential between them and the top of the table. First things first, they had to get past Eskişehirspor. It looked good for Trabzonspor as Selcuk Inan gave them the lead after 21 minutes, which would end up as the halftime score. In the 59th minute, Alanzinho shot a free kick off the Eskişehirspor wall, but ended up on the feet of Serkan Balci, who scored to double Trabzonspor’s lead to 2-0. Eskişehirspor pulled one goal back in the 64th minute, as Adem Sari scored off a mistake by Trabzonspor goalkeeper Onur Kivrak. Kivrak was starting in place of Tony Sylva, who was left off the first team roster after last week. The final score ended up 2-1 in favor of Trabzonspor. Whether Senol Gunes becomes the head coach officially or not, the next coach of Trabzonspor will have work to do.
Other results in Turkcell Super League action included Istanbul Büyükşehir Belediyespor 1-1 Gaziantepspor, Manisaspor 0-1 Kayserispor, Ankaragücü 1-0 Denizlispor, Antalyaspor 2-0 Gençlerbirliği, and Diyarbakirspor getting the free 3 points due to Ankaraspor’s disqualification.
The top five of the table are only separated by three points, with two Anatolian sides looking to make noise against the Istanbul big three. Fenerbahçe continues to lead the table at 31 points (10-1-3). With their eighth straight league victory, Beşiktaş is in second place with 30 points (9-3-2). Bursaspor and Galatasaray both have 29 points and a 9-2-3 record, but Bursaspor is in third with a +16 goal differential and Galatasaray is in fourth with a +13 goal differential. Kayserispor is in fifth place with 28 points (8-4-2).
